"The Forge of Friendship" Unveils Chirino-Monagas Artistic Ties
Launched for Martín Chirino's 100th birthday, "The Forge of Friendship" is a new book exploring modern Spanish sculpture through the master's profound friendship and creative collaboration with painter Rafael Monagas.
A new book called "The Forge of Friendship" offers a fresh look at modern Spanish sculpture. It focuses on the important sculptor Martín Chirino and his deep friendship with painter Rafael Monagas. This book, launched this week in Gran Canaria and Madrid, is part of the celebrations for Chirino's 100th birthday. It aims to shed light on the complex relationship between the master and his collaborator.
Antonio Puente edited the book and also wrote some essays for it. Other experts like Nilo Palenzuela, Javier Durán, Sonia Mauricio, Christian J. Perazzone, and Idalmy González also contributed. The book explores the strong bond between Chirino (1925-2019), a major figure in Spanish abstract art, and Monagas (born 1947), a well-known artist from the '70s generation. Their partnership began in the 1980s at the Morata de Tajuña workshop. It was more than just Monagas helping Chirino with iron forging; it became a crucial creative exchange for both artists.
The Canary Islands government's Vice-Ministry of Culture and Cultural Heritage is supporting this project and has organized two launch events. The first is this Tuesday at 7:00 PM at the La Regenta Art Center in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Speakers will include Horacio Umpiérrez, the Vice-Minister of Culture; Rafael Monagas himself; and Antonio Puente. The second event will be on Thursday at 6:30 PM at the regional government's office in Madrid, with Migdalia Machín, the Minister of Universities, Science, Innovation, and Culture, attending.
"The Forge of Friendship" is split into two main parts. The first section, written by Antonio Puente, includes "Conversations with the Painter" and an analysis of Monagas's career. The second part, called "The Edges of the Spiral," features articles by different experts on Chirino's work. Antonio Puente also coordinated this section and wrote the final chapter about the sculptor.
This book aims to do two things: first, to offer new insights into Martín Chirino that haven't been collected in one place before; and second, to shine a light on Rafael Monagas. It shows him not only as a leading artist of the '70s generation but also as Chirino's closest partner in creating his iron sculptures. This publication follows "Sculpted Memory" (Galaxia Gutenberg, 2019), a book based on conversations between Chirino and Puente, further cementing Puente's dedication to documenting the sculptor's life and work.
