This Sunday, September 14, is a special day in La Laguna – the celebration in honor of Christ of La Laguna. Today, the statue of Christ will be returned from the Cathedral to its usual place – the Royal Sanctuary.
The morning began with the traditional ringing of bells in all the city's churches. This announced the beginning of a day filled with faith and important events in the historical center.
The city's mayor, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, said he was proud that the streets were filled with people in the morning who came to this important event. According to him, such moments remind us of the history of the celebration and evoke memories in many generations of La Laguna residents.
At 10:00 a solemn procession began. The Councillor for Culture, Adrián del Castillo, carried the Royal Standard from the Town Hall to the Cathedral. Various officials, military personnel, and consuls gathered there.
In addition to Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, the President of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, as well as many members of the city council, the Parliament of the Canary Islands, and other organizations were present.
There was also a delegation from the Royal House at the event, which this year was represented by Lieutenant General Julio Salom Herrera.
After the service, a procession took place to return the statue of Christ from the Cathedral to the Sanctuary. Everything went peacefully.
The celebration will continue tonight. At 19:00, a festive mass will be held in the Cathedral, accompanied by the Achamán musical group.
After the mass, the statue of Christ will be carried through the main streets of the historical center.
The final point of the route will be Christ Square. The statue will be installed there, and a festive fireworks display will begin at 23:00.
