In La Laguna, the former San Benito station will be transformed into a police headquarters, but work will not begin until 2026 due to technical difficulties and an increase in the project's budget to 200,000 euros.

In La Laguna, the former San Benito station is planned to be transformed into a new police headquarters, but work will not begin until 2026.

The city council wanted to commission the project this year, but due to the complex procedure and the need to take into account all the technical details, it was decided to postpone the start of work to 2026. The contractor will be selected at the same time.

This was announced by the Finance Councilor, Paki Rivero, and this information was confirmed by the Department of Works and Infrastructure.

Initially, it was planned to spend 95,000 euros on the building reconstruction project, but now the amount has increased to 200,000 euros. This amount includes not only the development of the project, but also technical supervision of the work and other necessary research. The department is still deciding whether to hold a tender or commission the project directly.

It is important that the building of the former station cannot be demolished or significantly rebuilt. It can only be reconstructed and adapted to the needs of the police. Therefore, the project will take into account how many floors the underground parking lot will have, how to use and repair the infrastructure, and how to divide the premises inside.

Currently, the former San Benito station is used as a regular parking lot. Last year, the city council demolished a metal canopy there. The old station building remained on this site, where the future La Laguna police station will be located. In 2023, the Government of the Canary Islands transferred this former bus station to the city of La Laguna.
