The Cabildo of Tenerife has requested the use of land for the construction of an Island Water Sports Center, which will include sports activities and a cafeteria for the residents of the municipality.

The Cabildo of Tenerife has formally submitted a request to the Port Authority of the province for the use of approximately 11,500 square meters for the construction and operation of the Tenerife Island Water Sports Center (Cidemat), which will remain at its former location.

Of this area, 6,669.7 square meters will be on land and a total of 4,845.5 will be at sea, and it is planned to use them both for sports activities related to water sports and their training, as well as for the installation of a cafeteria that will serve the users of the center, but will also be open to all residents of the city.

The announcement was published in the Official Gazette of the Province (BOP) last Monday, which opened a twenty-day period for public discussion. Administrations, institutions and private individuals who are interested can review the case materials and submit their comments. According to the island councilor for sports, Yolanda Moliné, this allows them to continue moving forward, and if all goes well, the tender could begin before the end of this year.

In January of last year, it was announced that work could begin this year, but administrative procedures have delayed the timeline. The projected works, worth 6.5 million euros, will take 21 months after the award of the contract for execution.

The mayor of the capital, José Manuel Bermúdez, expressed his satisfaction, as he believes that the Cabildo is taking steps to restore the water sports center and improve the situation in the city. The infrastructure was closed in March 2020 due to its state of disrepair. The Cabildo has created a commission to monitor the project together with the Santa Cruz City Council and the Port Authority of the province.
