The La Laguna government and the university are discussing the construction of two new dormitories to address the shortage of student housing, with a capacity of over 800 beds.

The mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, and the rector of the local university, Francisco García, met to discuss important issues before the start of the academic year. In particular, they talked about the fact that many students want to live in university dormitories, but there are not enough places for everyone.

The Deputy Mayor of Laguna, together with the Councilor for Development, Adolfo Cordobés, told representatives of the university about two plans for the construction of new dormitories. They can be built jointly – by the university, the city authorities, and a private company. One dormitory is planned to be built near the Faculty of Journalism (the land already belongs to the city), and the other in the Montaña del Drago area, in San Miguel de Geneto.

Luis Yeray Gutiérrez emphasized that "these dormitories will be useful for everyone: it will be cheaper for students to live than to rent an apartment, and there will be more free apartments on the rental market for other residents of the city, because housing is currently difficult."

The rector of the university, Francisco García, assured that he "fully supports these ideas, because this is a big problem for both parties." He added: "We have more than 20,000 students, and only about 550 places in dormitories. There are twice as many people who want to live in a dormitory, so new dormitories will greatly help both the university and the entire city."

According to Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, "more than 800 students will be able to live in the two new dormitories, and this will immediately reduce the demand for rental housing in the city." He also noted that the city council is looking for new plots of land where it will be possible to build more housing for students and other social needs.

The meeting also discussed other important issues, such as the city council's support for various educational programs. The rector of the university thanked the city authorities for their understanding and support, thanks to which it is possible to implement many important projects.
