The bishop called for peace and condemned xenophobia and violence in the Canary Islands.
Bishop Eloy Santiago called for overcoming xenophobia, violence, and political strife, emphasizing the importance of peace and harmony, especially against the backdrop of the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.
Bishop Eloy Santiago of Nivariensis called on us to get rid of xenophobia, all violence, and "dirty political squabbles" where people do not want to listen to each other and seek understanding.
During a service in honor of the Virgin of Candelaria, the patron saint of the Canary Islands, he criticized the "overly principled and ideological talk of some Christians, which bears little resemblance to the Gospel," as well as the "contemptuous attitude towards those who are not like us, especially migrants."
He warned that where harmony and peace should be, "hatred, violence, and intolerance" often grow. The worst thing is when this spills over into wars, as in Ukraine or Gaza. Therefore, he urged people not to be indifferent.
Eloy Santiago emphasized that violence is "very close, it is in our neighborhoods and even homes" in the Canary Islands, especially against women and children.
He also mentioned the "aggression among young people in schools and some groups of people at sporting events or festivals" and warned against the "proliferation of games and films with a lot of violence, hatred, blood, and death, which poison the minds of our teenagers and young people."
The bishop called on all Christians not to be confused and instead to build peace.
