"Icodense" shocks the Canary Islands: 8 consecutive victories, 31 goals scored, 0 conceded!
The Canary Islands team "Icodense" is demonstrating an incredible start in the First Regional Division, winning all 8 matches with an impressive goal difference.
There is a team in the Canary Islands that is currently playing incredible football! "Icodense" from the north of Tenerife has won all 8 matches in the First Regional Division, scoring 31 goals and conceding none! This is their best start in their century-long history.
No other team on the islands has such impressive statistics. And this is despite the fact that their league includes well-known clubs such as "Realejos", "Orotava" and "Vera", although they are not as strong as they used to be. "To be honest, we didn't expect such a start. We wanted to play well, but this has exceeded all our expectations," says David Alonso, the coach of "Icodense".
Keeping a clean sheet in eight consecutive matches is not just a coincidence. "We work hard on this every day. We think not only about how to attack, but also about what to do when we don't have the ball. If you don't concede, then you already have at least one point," Alonso explains.
These 24 points in the standings are the result of the work the team did earlier. Last season, "Icodense" almost reached the Primera, but lost to "Victoria de Tazacorte" in a penalty shootout. That match was very painful for the team. "It was difficult, because we lost the chance to be promoted again. Football hasn't been very kind to "Icodense" for the last ten years," the coach recalls.
"But we got up and started working again. This helped us to start this season well." So the past failure became their motivation. Although "Icodense" was not considered a favorite this year, as it was last year, they have learned to cope with the pressure better and appreciate every point. "We realized how difficult this league is. Even though we have eight wins, we are still four points behind "Vera" and five behind "Tejina". This shows how serious the competition is here," says the coach, adding that they are "cautious" and not flying high, because they know that their winning streak "could end at any moment".
Another strength of "Icodense" is that the team consists of local guys. Most of the players were born in Icod, and there are also several players from neighboring towns. Many from last season remained in the team. "Last year we did a lot of work in training, so this year we only needed to make a few adjustments," the coach explains.
The fans also support the team. Every match at the "El Molino" stadium gathers from 250 to 350 people. "People are thrilled," says Alonso. The "Sangre Milenaria" fan club supports the team even at away matches. But the coach urges caution: "The more you win, the closer you are to losing. What matters is how we react when that moment comes."
"Icodense" has difficult matches ahead against strong opponents. "There are no easy games in this league," says Alonso. "Last year we lost the chance to be promoted away from home, so this year we are approaching each away game differently." The coach reminds that the gap from the competitors is small: "We are four points behind "Vera" and five behind "Tejina". Everything can change in two matches. That's why we don't relax."
However, "Icodense" has already repeated its best result in the club's history - eight consecutive victories, as in the 1981/82 season. And this inspires and adds ambition. "Our goal is to reach the Primera. The club, the fans and the players deserve it," says the coach. But this year "Icodense" is fighting for high places in the league in a different role: "Last year we were the favorites from the very beginning. This year we are not. Now other teams, such as "Vera" or "Realejos", have this role."
Football in the north of the island is not going through the best of times. Many teams are trying to regain their former glory. "Icodense" is no exception, but their results speak for themselves right now. Today, the club from "El Molino" is a well-organized team with local players who are dedicated to their work. "We are 24 points closer to our goal. Nothing else," says David Alonso.
Time will tell whether "Icodense" will be able to withstand the pressure and realize its dream of promotion. But for now, the numbers speak for themselves: eight matches, eight wins, 31 goals scored and none conceded. This is the best team in regional football in the Canary Islands!
