"Arona Guanches" starts the new season with hopes for the playoffs and a new pavilion.
The "Arona Guanches" hockey team begins the 25/26 season with a renewed roster and hopes for better results, preparing for the move to the new Las Galletas pavilion.
"El Arona Tenerife Guanches" kicks off the new 25/26 season! Last season was difficult, with a struggle for a place in the league and infrastructure problems. But the southern team is optimistic about the future. This year they start the season on Saturday away against "Erizos Rudos" (start at 19:00). The team has a lot of hopes, ambitions and a desire to win. The Higher Roller Hockey League is becoming increasingly competitive, so you can't relax. But "Arona" has strengthened the squad and is ready for new challenges.
Last season, "Arona Guanches" barely escaped relegation in the last match. They did not participate in the King's Cup and did not make it to the playoffs. The team's leader, Asier Gayoso, who is both a coach and a player, says that the main goal is to prevent a repeat of such a difficult season.
Gayoso has been coaching the team for four years and playing for it for more than five years. He admits that he is always worried before the start of the season. Especially now, when there are many new players in the team, and it is unknown how they will play together. The first match this year is away against "Erizos Rudos", with whom they have already met twice last season.
"Last season we drew with them and lost by one goal. This shows how equal the teams are," says Gayoso. He expects a tense game where there will be no room for error.
In addition to preparing for the new season, the team is waiting to move to the new Las Galletas pavilion. This will give them the opportunity to develop and meet their ambitions. In the summer, "Arona Tenerife Guanches" actively worked on strengthening the squad. Last year they signed only one player, and this year they invited several international players. Czech Petr Skoloud, veteran Marek Loskot and young Slovak talent Roan Buchman have joined the team. Spanish players Manel de la Cruz and Hector Gallardo have also joined the team.
The main goal of the team is not to fight for survival at the end of the season. Asier Gayoso says that fighting for titles is a prospect, but now they want to get to the King's Cup and the playoffs. The team wants to be among the top four. That's what all the efforts in the summer were aimed at.
The 25/26 season for "Arona Guanches" roller hockey starts with hopes for the best. The team is also preparing to move to the new Las Galletas pavilion. This is an important moment in the history of the club, which has been playing in the old Arona municipal pavilion for many years. Although the old pavilion was home, it no longer met the requirements of elite roller hockey. But we will have to wait, because the new pavilion is unlikely to be ready for the first home game.
The move has been delayed due to bureaucratic obstacles and unfulfilled promises. Coach-player Asier Gayoso says that he no longer knows what to answer to questions about the readiness of the new pavilion. It was originally planned to open at the end of last season, then at the beginning of this season, and now everything points to October.
The move will put an end to the era of the old Arona pavilion. There were victories, defeats, and celebrations. But the old pavilion also hindered the development of the club. According to Gayoso, it was "like chopping a tree with a blunt axe."
Despite everything, "Arona" squeezed the most out of its old home. It was there that they retained their place in the league in the last second of the last match of the 24/25 season. Gayoso doesn't want to experience anything like that again. "I wouldn't want to experience what we experienced last year in any season of my life," he admits.
Moving to Las Galletas opens up new opportunities. "As soon as we can start training there, I think the level of the team will increase, because the conditions on the court will be much better," Gayoso assures.
