Emergency crews have successfully contained a brush fire that threatened critical infrastructure and residential areas near Tenerife’s Ofra Hospital.

Wildfires burning near critical infrastructure like hospitals and sports centers have once again exposed the vulnerability of Tenerife’s urban fringes. On Friday, a brush fire broke out near the Ofra Hospital, forcing emergency teams to mobilize quickly to protect the densely populated area and its essential services.

The fire started on a hillside next to the El Mundialito sports complex. Firefighters from the Tenerife Consortium led the response, with support from municipal police in La Laguna and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. While crews are still working at the scene, authorities have confirmed the fire is contained, meaning there is no longer a risk to the nearby hospital or residential neighborhoods.

These fires are common in the scrubland surrounding Tenerife’s capital, highlighting the urgent need to clear and maintain vacant land during the high-risk season. Managing these areas is vital for public safety and ensures that critical facilities—such as the former Thorax Hospital, which sits on a hillside frequently threatened by these blazes—remain protected.
