Tenerife enters the summer season with water reservoirs at 77.6% capacity, marking a year-on-year increase while authorities continue to urge careful consumption to ensure agricultural stability.

Tenerife’s water reservoirs are entering the summer season at 77.6% capacity, holding a total of 3,911,167 cubic meters. This is an increase of 362,391 cubic meters compared to this time last year, providing a better buffer for the island’s agricultural sector. However, local authorities are still urging residents and farmers to use water carefully.

Valentín González, the Councilor for the Primary Sector, emphasized that despite the improved numbers, the current climate makes strict water management necessary. He noted that improving irrigation efficiency and limiting waste are essential to keeping supplies stable as temperatures rise and demand increases throughout the summer.

There is a noticeable difference in water levels between the north and south of the island. The north is currently at 81.4% capacity, with the Isla Baja and Valle de Guerra facilities performing particularly well at 91.1% and 90% respectively. Meanwhile, the south holds 1,116,285 cubic meters. This southern figure is influenced by the fact that the Valle San Lorenzo reservoir is temporarily closed for maintenance and technical upgrades.

Managing water is a vital challenge in the Canary Islands, where low rainfall makes the agricultural industry heavily dependent on storage infrastructure. With more water available than in previous years, the Island Council’s main goal for the summer is to balance this supply with ongoing maintenance work to ensure the system remains efficient for all users.
