Tenerife Warnings Lifted; Gran Canaria Under Rain Alert

Tenerife sees weather warnings lifted for January 5th, though rain and colder temperatures are still expected, while Gran Canaria faces a yellow rain warning for Monday amid cloudy skies, slight temperature drops, and strong winds across the Canary Islands.

Tenerife's weather is set to improve on January 5th, though some rain is still expected. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has lifted all weather warnings for the island. Similarly, the Canary Islands Government has reduced its rain alert to a 'pre-alert' status for El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria.

On Tenerife itself, expect periods of cloudiness. The north of the island will be mostly cloudy or overcast, with rain likely. This rain could be steady in the mid-altitudes during the afternoon and occasional on other parts of the island. It will also be a colder day, with temperatures dropping slightly, especially in some areas. Light frosts are possible on the central peaks. Winds will start from the northwest, then shift to the northeast and pick up strength from midday. Very strong gusts are possible on the southeast slopes and in the far northwest late in the day.

For Monday, the only active Aemet warning is for Gran Canaria. The north of Gran Canaria has a yellow warning for rain, in effect from 10:00 AM until midnight. This warning predicts up to 40 mm of rain over 12 hours, mainly impacting the mid-altitude areas.

Looking at the general forecast for the entire Canary Islands archipelago, Aemet expects periods of cloudiness. The northern parts of the mountainous islands will become cloudy or overcast, with rain likely. This rain could be steady in the mid-altitudes during the afternoon. Other areas might see occasional rain, and there's a small chance of strong showers around Lanzarote until early morning.

Temperatures across the archipelago will drop slightly, with a more noticeable decrease in mid- and high-altitude regions. Besides Tenerife, high areas of La Palma could also experience light frosts. Winds will be from the north, shifting to the northeast and getting stronger in the afternoon. Exposed slopes and peaks might experience very strong gusts by the end of the day.
