The Tenerife Island Council has unveiled a major infrastructure project to alleviate traffic congestion in Los Cristianos by introducing a turbo-roundabout and an expanded underpass to separate through-traffic from local transit.

The Tenerife Island Council has unveiled a new plan to ease traffic congestion at the Los Cristianos junction, marking a significant shift in how the south of the island manages its infrastructure. The project aims to address the strain caused by rapid population growth and tourism, which has intensified following the development of the El Moj贸n area.

The plan focuses on two main improvements. First, the existing oval-shaped roundabout at the top of the town will be replaced with a larger, more efficient "turbo-roundabout." This new design will feature dedicated lanes to help traffic flow more smoothly without clogging the center of the junction.

Second, Avenida de Chayofita will undergo a major redesign. The project includes a new transport hub that brings together buses, taxis, and parking to reduce conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles. A key feature is an expanded underpass: the road will be lowered beneath the Juan Carlos I roundabout to connect with the TF-665 and extend toward Calle Pedregales. This underground route is designed to separate through-traffic from local traffic, while also creating better access to the highway and new exits via Calle Hermano Pedro de Bethencourt.

By moving traffic underground, the project aims to reclaim space for pedestrians and improve safety on one of the island鈥檚 busiest roads. These upgrades are essential for managing the increased traffic expected as the El Moj贸n sector continues to grow.
