Tenerife Unveils €200 Million Road Overhaul to Tackle Congestion

Tenerife’s road network is set for a major overhaul. The Island Council has unveiled a plan for 2026–2029 aimed at repairing aging infrastructure and easing traffic congestion. With a budget of over 200 million euros, the project includes 80 separate interventions covering more than 200 kilometers of road.

Led by Island President Rosa Dávila and Highways Chief Dámaso Arteaga, this is the most ambitious road investment in the Canary Islands in the last decade. The strategy focuses on modernizing the network to improve safety and reduce travel times—both of which are significant challenges due to the island’s mountainous terrain and high volume of traffic.

Before the main project begins, the administration is launching an urgent "shock phase" this August. A 12-million-euro budget has been allocated for 30 immediate repairs to address structural damage caused by Storm Therese. These initial works will focus on stabilizing slopes, resurfacing damaged roads, and improving drainage systems to better protect the network against future severe weather.

As the Canary Islands face increasing pressure on their transport systems, managing the road network has become a top priority for local government. The Council’s ability to complete these projects on schedule will be crucial to reducing the daily traffic bottlenecks that affect both residents and the island’s logistics sector.
