The Cabildo de Tenerife has officially approved a 15.2-million-euro modernization project for the TF-180 road to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety between Santa Cruz and La Laguna.

After years of public pressure, the long-awaited modernization of the TF-180—the historic road connecting Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna—is finally moving forward. The Cabildo de Tenerife has officially unblocked the comprehensive reform plan for this vital route, which has suffered from poor conditions and heavy traffic congestion for some time.

The 15.2-million-euro project covers a six-kilometer stretch between La Cervecera and La Vuelta de Los Pájaros. According to the Island Highways Department, construction is expected to take 24 months once work begins on-site.

Beyond simply resurfacing the road, the project addresses a key demand from local residents: better space for pedestrians. The current road design is outdated and prioritizes vehicles, often leaving pedestrians at risk and creating a divide between neighborhoods. This investment aims to balance traffic flow with safer, more accessible walkways, better integrating the road into the surrounding residential areas.

This project is a significant step toward updating infrastructure to match the growth of the metropolitan area. By improving safety and comfort for all users, the renovation marks a major turning point in how mobility is managed between Tenerife’s two largest population centers.
