Tenerife-UK Travel: ETA Required From Feb 2026

Source: El Día

From February 25, 2026, many travellers, including Spanish citizens from Tenerife, will require an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter the UK, with airlines refusing boarding to those without it.

If you're planning a trip from Tenerife to the United Kingdom, get ready for a new travel rule. From February 25, 2026, many travellers will need a special permit called an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland. This new requirement is essential to avoid problems at the airport, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already shared details on how to apply.

The UK government has confirmed that from this date, Spanish citizens who don't already have a UK visa or legal residency will have to get an ETA before they can board their flight. Airlines will not let you on the plane without an approved permit.

The ETA is a new type of permit required by the UK government for visitors from countries that don't usually need a visa for short trips. While the system starts in February 2026, controls will become stricter, especially at airports. From that date, it won't be enough just to apply for an ETA; you must have it approved before you travel.

This new rule directly impacts Tenerife residents travelling to the UK for holidays, business, family visits, or short stays. It also applies to those passing through the country who need to go through border control. Data from Aena shows that the Santa Cruz de Tenerife province has 325 weekly flights connecting the Canary Islands with UK airports.

Each year, 5.5 million passengers travel between this province and the UK. However, not everyone will need an ETA. It's only required for those who do not officially live in the UK and do not hold British or Irish citizenship.

Tenerife residents who legally live in the UK won't need an ETA. However, they must have an electronic UKVI account on the eVisas platform and keep their personal and passport details up to date. For those with both Spanish and British citizenship, the UK government advises travelling with a valid British passport. If they try to enter as foreign citizens from February 2026, they might face issues when boarding.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns that once this rule starts, airlines will refuse boarding to anyone without an approved ETA. This is a big change for all tourists. Also, remember that an ETA does not allow you to work or study in the UK. For those purposes, you'll still need to apply for the correct visa, even for short stays.

The British government advises applying for your ETA only through the official UK portal. Be careful of private companies that offer this service at high prices, as authorities have found cases of fraud. It's best to apply at least three working days before your trip. While most responses come within minutes, some applications might need extra checks.

The introduction of the ETA creates a new situation for travel between Tenerife and the UK, which is a very popular destination for people from the Canary Islands. To avoid problems and being stranded from February 25, 2026, it's crucial to plan ahead and make sure you have your approved authorisation.
