Tenerife Transport Network Successfully Manages Record Demand During Papal Visit
Tenerife successfully managed a major logistical challenge during Pope Leo XIV’s recent visit, safely transporting over 268,000 passengers and coordinating a large-scale security operation without any serious incidents.
Pope Leo XIV’s recent visit to Tenerife put the island’s transport system to the test, and the results were a success. According to the Tenerife Island Council, the island handled over 268,000 public transport trips on June 12, proving that local authorities can effectively coordinate large-scale events.
The operation’s success relied on encouraging the public to use buses and trams instead of private cars. The bus company TITSA carried 210,045 passengers with the help of 10,000 extra seats, while Metrotenerife served 58,683 passengers by running double-car trams every ten minutes to manage the crowds heading toward the metropolitan area.
Beyond transport, the event was a major security operation. With over 30,000 people gathering at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and traffic restrictions in place on major roads like the TF-5, nearly 500 professionals were deployed. The Island Emergency Plan brought together security forces, firefighters, the Red Cross, and medical teams. They handled 53 minor incidents, most of which were related to the weather.
Island Council President Rosa Dávila stated that the event proved the island is capable of managing complex logistical challenges. Traffic and transport services began returning to normal at 2:00 p.m., with full service restored by 4:00 p.m. The operation, which included a field hospital at the Exhibition Center and the strategic use of the Santa Cruz Interchange, ended without any serious incidents. The council now views this as a successful model for managing high demand in La Laguna and Santa Cruz.
