Tenerife Tram Strike: Preliminary Deal Reached After Record Year
Metrotenerife has reached a preliminary deal to end its nearly two-year tram strike, which includes improved safety and working conditions, following a record-breaking 2025 with nearly 25 million passengers.
Metrotenerife is starting the year with good news: a preliminary deal has been reached to end the tram strike, which has lasted almost two years. This agreement ensures the tram service can run smoothly, especially after a record-breaking 2025. Last year, nearly 25 million passengers used the tram, the highest number since it first opened. This shows how important the tram is for getting around the city and how much people trust the service.
What the Agreement Means for Workers
The new agreement focuses on improving safety and working conditions for staff. A major point during negotiations was removing silica sand, a process that has been ongoing during the strike to make sure the workplace is healthy. Since June 2025, all 26 trams have been using calcium silicate instead, a material approved by the tram manufacturer, Alstom. Also, all facilities, depots, and track areas have been thoroughly cleaned. A specialist company, Inspección y Seguridad de Riesgos (ISR), checked this work and confirmed that all areas were properly decontaminated.
Regarding working conditions, the agreement includes plans for a more modern "21st Century Administration." Other issues and requests will be discussed soon as part of a new collective bargaining agreement between the company and union representatives.
Before it's final, workers need to approve this preliminary agreement at a meeting next Wednesday, January 28.
Record Passenger Numbers in 2025
Beyond the strike ending, the tram also had a very successful 2025. Last year saw the highest number of passengers in the tram's history, with 24,953,848 people using the service between January and December. This is the most demand the tram has seen since it started running in 2007. The number of passengers continues to grow, up from 2024. In fact, since public transport became free in 2023, tram usage has jumped by 61.02%. By the end of 2025, the Tenerife Tram had carried a total of 280,914,903 passengers over its 18 years of service.
This new agreement brings stability, allowing Metrotenerife to confidently tackle future transport challenges in 2026, especially with passenger numbers continuing to rise.
