Tenerife Town Expands Senior Care Home by 30 Places with €400K Investment
Buenavista del Norte in Tenerife is expanding its Senior Citizens' Home by 30 places to a total of 75, investing €400,000 to enhance social and healthcare services for its growing elderly population.
Spain's elderly population is growing, leading to a greater need for social and healthcare services. Buenavista del Norte, a town in Tenerife, is addressing this by significantly expanding its Senior Citizens' Home. The facility will increase its capacity by 30 places, going from 45 to a total of 75. This expansion is possible thanks to an investment of 400,000 euros.
The project will add 20 new residential places, bringing that total to 40. It will also create 10 extra places for the day center, increasing its capacity to 35. The 400,000 euro investment will be used to update the building's original plans and finish the third floor, which is currently just a structure. This new floor will house additional rooms and care areas.
This expansion is a joint effort between the Department of Social Action of the Cabildo de Tenerife (via its Institute of Social and Socio-sanitary Care, IASS) and the Buenavista del Norte City Council. Their agreement isn't just about adding more space; it also aims to improve the center's social and technical facilities. For example, the semi-basement will be converted to include important services like a physiotherapy room, multi-purpose areas, common rooms, and a laundry.
Currently, the Senior Citizens' Home has 20 residential places, with five for those needing medium care and the rest for those needing less support. It also offers 25 day center places. The home provides daily activities for all users, including personal hygiene for residents, physical exercises, cognitive games, and special seasonal events.
Both organizations involved stress that this partnership aims to strengthen social and healthcare services. It responds to the growing need for care by focusing on the well-being of older people. Águeda Fumero, the island's Social Action councilor, emphasized that investing in facilities like this gives families peace of mind, ensures professional care, and upholds the dignity of the elderly. Buenavista del Norte's Mayor, Eva García Herrera, called the agreement a "strategic investment" for the town's future. She said it would provide a wider range of higher-quality services, showing the council's dedication to its residents' well-being and essential public services.
