Tenerife Town El Rosario Tops Income Charts Thanks to Coastal Developments

El Rosario, Tenerife, boasts the highest average income in the Canary Islands due to affluent residents drawn to its coastal developments and peaceful environment.

In Tenerife, the town of El Rosario boasts the highest average income per person, at €17,109. Mayor Escolástico Gil explains that the key is the new coastal housing developments in areas like Tabaiba and Radazul. These areas attract high-ranking officials, professionals like lawyers and doctors, and successful business owners.

El Rosario's success stands in contrast to the lower income levels seen in some northern midland areas and Arona, according to a recent report by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). Following El Rosario in the income rankings are Tegueste (€15,490) and Candelaria (€15,334), then Santa Cruz (€15,110), El Sauzal (€14,373), Puerto de la Cruz (€13,871), Tacoronte (€13,864), and La Laguna (€13,863).

It might seem surprising that towns without major economic activity are leading the way. However, these towns are simply where high-income earners choose to live. Wealthy individuals often prefer quieter locations away from tourist crowds and densely populated areas. They are drawn to El Rosario's coastal area, conveniently located between the South and Santa Cruz, the peaceful countryside of Tegueste, or the well-connected town of Candelaria. Also, because these towns have smaller populations, the presence of high earners has a greater impact on the average income.

Mayor Gil notes that improvements to infrastructure and beachfront areas have made El Rosario's coast even more appealing. The town has consistently held the top spot for income since 2015. In 2019, it had the largest lead over second-place Tegueste, with a difference of €1,848. Currently, the difference is €1,619.

The leader of the Iniciativa por El Rosario-Verdes party adds that La Esperanza, another area within El Rosario, has also seen an influx of officials and professionals seeking a peaceful environment.
