The CajaCanarias Foundation is hosting a film event on March 26 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This event aims to explore important moments from Spain's transition to democracy, especially those connected to the country's Historical Memory Law.
The main feature will be the documentary "Quesada. The Truth of Silence." This film looks into the case of Javier Fernández Quesada, a university student who died in 1977. He was shot by the Civil Guard at the University of La Laguna and is officially recognized as the last victim of Franco's regime.
The event starts at 7:00 PM at the CajaCanarias Cultural Space. It will include the film screening, followed by a discussion. The documentary's director, Iván López, and producer, Lamberto Guerra, will be there to talk about their research and how they made the film. Journalist Daniel Millet will lead the discussion.
Iván López spent nearly fifteen years researching for "Quesada. The Truth of Silence." His work includes new interviews that are crucial for understanding this event. The film is considered one of the most thorough examinations of a key period for Spain's transition and for the historical and democratic memory of the Canary Islands.
Before its official release, the project received support from several organizations, including the Canary Institute of Cultural Development (ICDC), the Canary Islands Government's General Directorate of Youth, the regional Parliament, and the city councils of La Laguna and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Previous screenings and discussions of "Quesada. The Truth of Silence" have consistently drawn large crowds, filling venues almost every time.
Iván López, from Puerto de la Cruz, studied Information Sciences and Philology at the University of La Laguna and has a master's degree in Film Direction. He teaches scriptwriting at the Literary School of La Laguna. His work has been recognized at festivals both in Spain and internationally. His previous documentaries include "Dueños de una esperanza," which won the CajaCanarias Prize for Best Documentary Short Film, and "Clandestinos. Fronteras en el mar." "Quesada. The Truth of Silence" has won awards for best investigative and analysis documentary at Offcinedoc and has been selected for international competitions like Girona and Ficpba in Buenos Aires. In fiction, his 2018 film "Platón" won awards for editing and cinematography at the Oklahoma Latin Film Festival.
Admission to the film event is free until all seats are taken. For more details about this cultural event, you can visit the official website of the CajaCanarias Foundation.
