The Tenerife Island Council has launched a plan to establish a unified public network of 71 electric vehicle charging points to improve infrastructure and accessibility for local drivers.

Tenerife is taking a major step toward sustainable travel. The Tenerife Island Council (Cabildo de Tenerife) has officially begun the process of creating a public electric vehicle charging network, which will feature 71 charging points across the island. This move aims to fix the current fragmented system, which has been a significant challenge for the island’s nearly 6,000 electric vehicle owners.

The project will be managed by a single company for an initial five-year period. By centralizing operations, the Council hopes to provide a consistent experience for drivers, including a unified app, standard payment methods, and a single customer service point. While the chosen company will handle maintenance, energy supply, and repairs, the Council will retain ownership of the charging stations and continue to set the rates and quality standards.

The network will be a mix of 37 Council-owned stations and 34 municipal facilities. This hybrid approach is designed to ensure that charging is available even in rural or less populated areas. The project is being funded in part by the state-run MOVES III program, which has already supported similar initiatives across the island.

There are still several bureaucratic steps to complete before the network is up and running. The management plan and usage rules are currently open for public review and comment. Once this feedback period ends and any issues are addressed, the Council will begin the bidding process to select an operator. Because these administrative procedures are still underway, there is no set date yet for when the full network will be operational.
