Tenerife to Host SM La Reina Iberdrola Volleyball Cup After Eight-Year Absence
Tenerife will host the SM La Reina Iberdrola Volleyball Cup from January 22nd to 25th, 2026, marking the tournament's return to the island for the first time since 2018.
The SM La Reina Iberdrola Volleyball Cup is coming back to Tenerife after an eight-year break. This is the first time the knockout tournament has been held on the island since 2018.
From January 22nd to 25th, 2026, the top eight teams from the first half of the Iberdrola League will battle it out to become champions, taking over from last year's winners, Avarca de Menorca.
The event, which is a significant national competition, was officially announced yesterday at the Cabildo de Tenerife. Present at the announcement were Yolanda Moliné, Sports Counselor for the Cabildo de Tenerife; Felipe Pascual, President of the Royal Spanish Volleyball Federation; José Francisco Pérez, Director General of Sports for the Government of the Canary Islands; Alicia Cebrián, Sports Councilor for Santa Cruz de Tenerife; along with leaders from major island clubs and representatives from the Tenerife Libby's La Laguna team.
This marks the return of the Iberdrola Queen's Cup to Tenerife, following the 2018 edition. The tournament's 51st edition will stick to its format of eight participating teams, who will discover their opponents through a draw.
The Royal Spanish Volleyball Federation (RFEVB) is organizing the event, with support from Iberdrola, the Cabildo de Tenerife, the Government of the Canary Islands, and the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council. The Canary Islands Volleyball Federation is also collaborating.
Bringing the tournament to Tenerife highlights the ongoing commitment to sports development and cements Tenerife's reputation as a prime location for major national and international sporting events. The island has strong ties to Spanish women's volleyball. The chosen venue, the Quico Cabrera pavilion, is named in honor of Quico Cabrera, the former president of Club Voleibol Tenerife, a team that dominated Spanish volleyball for nearly two decades.
Yolanda Moliné confirmed that the SM La Reina Cup will take place at the Quico Cabrera pavilion, paying tribute to "such a legendary president for Club Voleibol Marichal and for this sport." She encouraged everyone in Tenerife to attend, stating that the island will be the "epicenter of national volleyball." Moliné added that the Cabildo will continue to support and promote similar significant tournaments.
Felipe Pascual described it as "a great fortune" to host the tournament on the island, praising the "synergy between clubs and institutions." He also thanked the Canary Islands Federation and the Tenerife teams for their "involvement and unity," noting that coming to Tenerife for a Cup final feels like "coming home." He anticipates this will be the best Cup in recent years.
José Francisco Pérez emphasized the importance of the competition for young, aspiring players who can watch their idols, and for the Canary Islands, which is once again being recognized as a sports hub. He expressed confidence that four teams from the Canary Islands will be among the eight participants. Currently, the Iberdrola League includes one team from Tenerife, Libby's La Laguna, and three from Gran Canaria.
Alicia Cebrián stated that it is an "honor" for Santa Cruz to host the Queen's Cup at the Quico Cabrera Pavilion. She believes these events reinforce the city's commitment to women's sports and its ability to host top-level competitions. Cebrián invited citizens to enjoy a tournament featuring the country's best teams, expecting the pavilion to be filled with excitement and a great sporting atmosphere.
The Quico Cabrera Pavilion in Santa Cruz de Tenerife will host four days of top national volleyball, making the island the center of national women's volleyball and bringing together the top eight teams from the premier league.
