Tenerife will host an international women’s basketball preparation tournament at the Santiago Martín Pavilion from August 21 to 23 as the Spanish national team gears up for the 2026 World Cup.

Tenerife is set to become the heart of national women’s basketball once again this summer, further establishing the island as a premier destination for elite sports. The Spanish Basketball Federation and the local government have announced that the Santiago Martín Pavilion in La Laguna will host an international preparation tournament from August 21 to 23. This event will serve as a key warm-up for Miguel Méndez’s team as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup in Berlin.

The national team’s return to Tenerife builds on the strong connection formed during the 2018 World Cup, where the squad reached the podium. Beyond the games, the team will hold training sessions on the island, offering a chance to engage with the local sports community. Local officials, including Lope Afonso, Dimple Melwani, and Yolanda Moliné, noted that the event offers more than just basketball; it provides a boost to the tourism economy and serves as an inspiration for young local players, such as rising star Elena Buenavida.

The tournament will feature high-caliber opponents, providing the Spanish team with the competitive challenge needed to sharpen their skills. By choosing Tenerife for this training cycle, the Federation has reaffirmed its trust in the island’s world-class facilities and logistical expertise. Ultimately, the goal is twofold: to ensure the national team is in top form for the upcoming World Cup and to continue building Tenerife’s reputation as a top-tier hub for international sports tourism.
