The University of La Laguna’s Paraninfo will host the 12th International Ocean Film Tour this Sunday, featuring a series of marine documentaries and a presentation on shark and ray conservation in the Canary Islands.

This Sunday, Tenerife will host a unique event combining marine science with environmental awareness. Starting at 6:00 p.m., the University of La Laguna’s Paraninfo will present Volume 12 of the International Ocean Film Tour, an event designed to spark conversation about the importance of protecting our oceans.

The program features five documentaries—Christa Funk: Passion for the Waves, The Last Dive, A Different Beast, Up the Coast, and Home is the Ocean—which explore the complex relationship between humanity and the sea.

In addition to the films, the event will feature a presentation by Maite Asensio Elvira from the association Latitud Azul. An expert in marine sciences and oceanography, Asensio Elvira will discuss her work on the Conservation Strategies for Sharks and Rays in the Canary Islands project, supported by the European BestLife2030 program. Her research addresses a critical need for better data on local shark and ray populations, which is essential for creating effective protection policies.

The project highlights the importance of connecting the scientific community with the public to develop long-term management strategies for these vulnerable species. By working together, researchers and local stakeholders aim to ensure the survival of these predators in Canarian waters.
