Tenerife to Host FINA World Women's Youth Water Polo Championships
Tenerife is set to host the FINA World Women's Youth Water Polo Championships this August, leveraging its newly upgraded aquatic facilities to bolster the island's status as a premier destination for elite international sports.
Tenerife is strengthening its reputation as a premier destination for high-performance sports. According to the Island Council, the island will host the FINA World Women's Youth Water Polo Championships from August 16 to 23, highlighting a broader strategy to boost tourism by attracting elite international competitions.
The choice of the Tenerife Aquatic Sports Center (CDAT) in Puerto de la Cruz is a key part of this effort. Following a public investment of over 13 million euros, the 6,000-square-meter facility—equipped with an Olympic-sized pool, a 25-meter pool, and specialized training areas—has become the hub for both local and elite sports on the island. Beyond the competition itself, the event will bring nearly 400 athletes from 20 countries to Tenerife, providing a significant boost to the local economy and the island's international profile during the summer.
The eight-day tournament is structured to ensure intense competition, with each team playing at least six matches. The opening phase divides the teams into two levels: an elite group of eight, including reigning champions Spain, and a second group of twelve. After a series of knockout and consolation rounds, the final rankings will be decided on August 23.
The event is supported by the Government of the Canary Islands, the Puerto de la Cruz City Council, and the Royal Spanish Swimming Federation. Retired water polo legend Pili Peña will serve as the official ambassador, helping to promote women’s sports. For local officials, the championship is a chance to showcase the island’s logistical expertise, ideal year-round climate, and world-class facilities, all of which are intended to help Tenerife remain a top choice for future international sporting events.
