Tenerife Theater Production Uses Performance to Help Children Process Grief
Espacio La Granja in Santa Cruz de Tenerife will host Mar Mar Teatro’s production of Elara, a Journey to the Stars this Sunday, a play designed to help children navigate grief through music and storytelling.
Helping children process grief is both an emotional and educational challenge, and performing arts venues are increasingly using their programming to address it. This Sunday at 6:00 p.m., Espacio La Granja in Santa Cruz de Tenerife will host Elara, a Journey to the Stars, a production by Mar Mar Teatro suitable for children aged five and up.
The play takes a fresh approach to the loss of a loved one, using music and comedy to tell its story. The plot follows a young girl who, after her grandmother passes away, embarks on a metaphorical journey through space. This adventure helps the main character—and the audience—navigate the different stages of grief, turning a difficult and abstract topic into a helpful lesson on resilience and the cycle of life.
These types of performances are valuable because they provide children with emotional tools to cope with loss, which child psychologists suggest is best handled through open conversation and storytelling. Tickets are available for six euros on the cultural center’s website, or can be purchased at the theater box office before the show begins.
