Tenerife Targets MICE Sector Growth at IMEX Frankfurt to Diversify Economy
Tenerife is promoting its MICE sector at IMEX Frankfurt to diversify its economy and attract international corporate events through expanded infrastructure and new North American flight connections.
Tenerife is making the MICE sector—meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions—a key part of its strategy to diversify the island's economy. This week, a delegation from Tenerife is showcasing the island’s offerings at IMEX Frankfurt, Germany’s premier international events trade show, running from May 19 to 21.
Represented by the Tenerife Convention Bureau and supported by local hotel and event management companies, the island aims to attract professional visitors who provide a broad economic boost. This type of tourism benefits more than just hotels; it supports local audiovisual, transport, and catering services, helping to reduce seasonal fluctuations and increase the overall value of the destination.
Lope Afonso, the island’s Vice President and Minister of Tourism, noted that Tenerife’s competitiveness is built on its well-established infrastructure, which can accommodate events of all sizes. Dimple Melwani, CEO of Tourism of Tenerife, added that new direct flights to Toronto and Montreal are a strategic move to enter the North American market and attract corporate conferences from Canada.
The island’s event capacity has also been bolstered by the recent opening of major venues in Puerto de la Cruz, including the Gran Hotel Taoro and its congress center, as well as the Radisson Resort & Residences. By combining these new facilities with the professional connections made at the Frankfurt fair, Tenerife aims to stand out in a competitive global market where connectivity and logistics are the most important factors for success.
