Tenerife is positioning itself as a European aerospace hub by launching a specialized data management degree and expanding infrastructure to support its growing satellite industry.

Tenerife is taking a major step toward becoming a European aerospace hub by focusing on specialized education. During the announcement of the 3rd Canary Islands International Aerospace Congress (CIAC 2026), officials from the Island Council and the University of La Laguna (ULL) revealed plans for a new university degree in data management. Local authorities believe this field is the true economic driver of the industry, even more so than physical infrastructure.

This program will complement a planned aerospace engineering degree, addressing a critical need: the upcoming Canary Islands satellite constellation will generate vast amounts of data, requiring a highly skilled workforce to process and use it. The Technological and Renewable Energy Institute (ITER) will be central to this effort, using its supercomputing power to support specialists in fields like satellite-based positioning.

Juan José Martínez, the Island Councilor for Innovation, explained that the goal is to cover the entire aerospace value chain—from satellite launches to data analysis. This sector is expected to generate at least 18 million euros in economic impact. With 79 million euros already invested in local projects, Island Council President Rosa Dávila noted that the region is successfully attracting new businesses and supporting local firms like Canarysat.

The broader strategy includes building a network of European Space Agency (ESA)-certified business incubators across Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Fuerteventura, along with a new teleport to track satellite constellations.

The CIAC 2026, held on December 3 and 4 at the ITER, will highlight these developments, featuring industry leaders such as Airbus, Hispasat, Enaire, Open Cosmos, and Canarysat. This year’s event will also debut "CIAC Talent," a platform designed to connect local professionals with industry opportunities, bringing together research, training, and technology in areas ranging from astrophysics to aeronautics.
