Tenerife Symphony Orchestra to Perform Mendelssohn’s ‘Paulus’ for First Time in Archipelago
The Tenerife Symphony Orchestra will perform Felix Mendelssohn’s oratorio Paulus for the first time in the archipelago, with a free premiere at the Cathedral of La Laguna on March 26 followed by a second performance at the Auditorio de Tenerife on March 27.
On March 26, the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra will take on an ambitious musical challenge: the archipelago’s first-ever performance of Felix Mendelssohn’s oratorio, Paulus. The concert will take place at the Cathedral of La Laguna at 8:00 p.m.
This event is a collaboration between the Cabildo of Tenerife and the Diocese of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, serving as a highlight of the lead-up to Holy Week. By hosting the performance in the historic cathedral, organizers aim to bring high-level culture to unique venues, utilizing the building’s acoustics for this complex Romantic masterpiece. Honorary conductor Víctor Pablo Pérez will lead the orchestra, the Tenerife Opera–Intermezzo Choir, and a group of world-class soloists.
The vocal cast includes soprano Alicia Amo, mezzo-soprano Rinat Shaham (in her debut with the ensemble), tenor Airam Hernández, and baritone Josep-Ramón Olivé. Admission to the cathedral performance is free, though seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
For those unable to attend the premiere, the orchestra will perform Paulus again on Friday, March 27, at 7:30 p.m. at the Auditorio de Tenerife as part of its regular subscription season. Local officials have praised the project for its artistic ambition and its ability to blend the island’s cultural heritage with world-class musical performance.
