Tenerife Symphony Orchestra to Perform Mendelssohn’s 'Paulus' for First Time
The Tenerife Symphony Orchestra will perform Felix Mendelssohn’s oratorio Paulus for the first time in the archipelago, featuring a complete presentation at the Auditorio de Tenerife on March 27.
The Tenerife Symphony Orchestra is set to reach a major milestone this season with the archipelago’s first-ever performance of Felix Mendelssohn’s oratorio, Paulus. Conductor Víctor Pablo Pérez will lead the orchestra, noting the work’s historical significance and technical challenge. Written during Mendelssohn’s youth, the piece serves as a bridge between the complex style of Bach and the romantic ideals of the 19th century.
The performance will be presented in two formats. On Thursday, March 26, the Cathedral of La Laguna will host a selection of the work, continuing a ten-year partnership between the orchestra and the Diocese of Tenerife. The following day, the Auditorio de Tenerife will host the complete oratorio, featuring all 45 movements.
The orchestra will be joined by the Tenerife Opera-Intermezzo Choir, led by Miguel Ángel Arqued, and a quartet of soloists: Alicia Amo, Rinat Shaham, Airam Hernández, and Josep-Ramon Olivé. This production is a significant undertaking, both for its spiritual depth and the high level of skill required from the performers.
Friday’s concert will be preceded by two outreach events at the Auditorio. At 6:30 p.m., José Lorenzo Chinea will give a lecture in the Sala Avenida, hosted by the Tenerife Association of Friends of Music (Atadem). This will be followed at 6:45 p.m. by a "Musical Viewpoint" session in the Castillo Gallery, where the performers will discuss the production.
To help attendees reach the venue, the "Sinfónica Shuttle" bus service will run from various points across the island. Tickets for Friday’s performance are available online, by phone, or at the box office. Reservations for the shuttle service must be made by 11:00 p.m. on Thursday.
