The Tenerife Symphony Orchestra will perform Andy Akiho’s Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra and works by Jean Sibelius this Friday at the Auditorio de Tenerife under the baton of conductor Antony Hermus.

The Tenerife Symphony Orchestra is set for a significant performance this Friday at the Auditorio de Tenerife. Starting at 7:30 p.m., the concert will feature the island premiere of Andy Akiho’s Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra. Written in 2019 for Scottish soloist Colin Currie, the piece is known for its technical complexity and unique staging, which includes the use of tuned rice bowls.

Dutch conductor Antony Hermus will lead the performance. Hermus, currently the conductor laureate of the Belgian National Orchestra, is set to become the chief conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra for the 2027/2028 season.

The program also explores the work of Jean Sibelius. The orchestra will perform Finlandia (1899), a powerful piece of nationalist resistance that was once disguised under different titles to bypass Russian censorship. This will be followed by Sibelius’s Symphony No. 3 (1907), a work that highlights the composer’s shift toward a more concise and cohesive musical style.

Before the concert, the Tenerife Association of Friends of Music (Atadem) will host a free educational talk at 6:30 p.m. in the Sala Avenida, led by Sergio Rodríguez.

Tickets are available through the orchestra’s official website, by phone, or at the box office. The "Lanzadera Sinfónica"—a free bus service provided by Titsa—is available to transport attendees from various points on the island. Reservations for the bus must be made by 11:00 p.m. the night before the concert. The Tenerife Symphony Orchestra’s 2026/2027 season is supported by the CajaCanarias Foundation.
