Tenerife Summer Festivals Revive Cultural Heritage and Local Traditions
Tenerife’s summer festival season is underway with traditional romerías and folk celebrations across the island, serving to preserve cultural heritage while boosting the local economy.
The return of Tenerife’s summer festival calendar highlights the importance of romerías (pilgrimages) in bringing communities together and preserving the island’s cultural heritage. These events are more than just celebrations; they are a vital way to pass local traditions down to the next generation.
La Laguna will be at the heart of the festivities, centered around the San Benito Abad celebrations. The main pilgrimage takes place on Sunday, July 12, drawing large crowds and active participation from local folk groups and residents. On Saturday, July 11, the town will also host a children’s event designed to teach youngsters how to wear traditional clothing and appreciate local music—a key strategy for keeping these customs alive.
The celebrations extend well beyond La Laguna, reaching across the island. On Saturday, Granadilla de Abona will host the Romería de Los Blanquitos, while Adeje holds the Romería de Los Olivos. Meanwhile, Puerto de la Cruz will host a baile de magos (traditional folk dance), ensuring that both the north and south of the island are part of the festivities.
These pilgrimages and folk gatherings do more than honor tradition; they provide a significant boost to the local economy and culture. By showcasing local food and traditional arts, these events strengthen the Canary Islands' collective identity and remain a cornerstone of Tenerife’s summer cultural scene.
