Tenerife Struggles to Manage Chronic Traffic Congestion in Masca Village
Tenerife authorities are struggling to manage chronic traffic congestion and safety risks on the narrow, overwhelmed road leading to the protected village of Masca.
Managing traffic in Teno Rural Park has become a major headache for the Tenerife Island Council. The Barranco de Masca Residents' Association recently complained about constant gridlock on the TF-436, the only road leading to the village. This route is struggling to handle the massive number of tourists visiting the area—now the second most popular spot on the island—which clashes with the village’s status as a protected heritage site.
This is not a new issue; it is a chronic problem. Even after authorities restricted access to the ravine in 2018 to reduce overcrowding, current traffic controls are clearly failing. A recent incident, where a broken-down large vehicle blocked the entire road, highlighted how vulnerable the area is. The steep, narrow terrain is made even more dangerous by inconsiderate drivers who park rental cars and motorcycles in passing spots, blocking the way for others.
This constant pressure on the road disrupts the lives of local residents and raises serious safety concerns. The area’s rugged landscape—where a young British man, Jay Slater, tragically died two years ago—demands stricter management. While the island has banned vehicles longer than ten meters, the road remains a dangerous mix of cyclists, private cars, and emergency vehicles.
Masca is famous for its unique geology, wildlife, and pirate history, but its infrastructure simply hasn't kept up with its popularity. Frequent traffic jams during busy periods, such as Easter and the end of 2024 and 2025, show that authorities are still struggling to find a balance between protecting this natural landscape and managing the heavy flow of visitors.
