Tenerife South Hospital Expansion Project Moves Forward with Design Contract Award
The Canary Islands Health Service has awarded a €1.1 million contract to design a major expansion of Tenerife’s Hospital del Sur, aiming to introduce high-complexity services and improve operational efficiency for the region's growing population.
Healthcare in the south of Tenerife is set for a major upgrade. The Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) has officially awarded a contract to design the renovation and expansion of the Hospital del Sur, which is part of the University Hospital Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. The planning phase will cost nearly 1.1 million euros and is expected to take ten months to complete, setting the stage for a project vital to one of the island's busiest regions.
This project goes beyond simple remodeling; it aims to transform how the hospital operates. The design will focus on finishing two existing modules that are currently unused. The goal is to house high-complexity services, such as hemodynamics and critical care, while also adding a new hospitalization unit. The plan also includes reconfiguring the hospital’s layout to improve how patients and staff move through the building, making daily operations more efficient.
This investment addresses a long-standing request from local residents. Over the years, the hospital has become increasingly important, offering more services—such as palliative care, oncology, pharmacy, and laboratory testing—which has reduced the need for patients to travel to the metropolitan area. With recent additions like a new scanner and expanded emergency and diagnostic departments, the hospital is steadily increasing its ability to handle complex medical needs.
Finalizing this design is the necessary first step before the SCS can put the construction work out to tender. This project is a crucial move toward turning the Hospital del Sur into a primary reference center, ensuring it can support the region’s growing population and provide specialized care closer to home.
