Tenerife South Airport Expands Taxi Access

Tenerife South Airport will implement a new taxi system by the end of March, allowing taxis from four municipalities to pick up passengers to reduce wait times and improve tourist service.

Tenerife South Airport, a key spot for tourists, is changing its taxi service. Rosa Dávila, president of the Tenerife Island Council, announced on Wednesday that taxi driver groups are close to agreeing on a new plan. This plan aims to improve how passengers get picked up and solve old problems.

Under the new system, taxis from Granadilla, Arona, San Miguel, and Adeje will all be able to pick up passengers at the airport terminal. Before, only taxis from Granadilla, where the airport is located, were allowed to do this. This change is expected to start by the end of March.

An airport taxi manager will be in charge of organizing shifts. This person will make sure that when lots of people need taxis – more than Granadilla's taxis can handle – taxis from the other three towns can step in smoothly. The main goal is to stop long waits, which have annoyed tourists and hurt the island's reputation during busy times.

This new plan is an alternative to officially calling the airport a "Sensitive Area." That legal step, allowed by transport rules, would give the Island Council complete control over the taxi service, seeing it as important for the whole island. While the Council hasn't ruled out this "Sensitive Area" idea for the future, the agreement made by the taxi drivers themselves is a faster and easier solution to put in place.

President Dávila highlighted that this agreement, created by the taxi industry itself, is a quick way to meet the airport's transport needs. It avoids the complicated and slow paperwork involved in declaring a "Sensitive Area." The fact that taxi drivers were willing to agree is seen as crucial for making the island's main entry point more efficient and competitive for visitors.
