Drivers at Tenerife South Airport are preparing to file a formal complaint with labor authorities over unsafe working conditions. Trade unions FSC-CCOO and USO Canarias argue that the current environment violates occupational safety regulations and requires immediate intervention.
The dispute began when airport operator AENA reorganized the passenger pickup area, introducing a 30-minute parking limit and new fees. This forced transport companies to move their drivers to an exterior lot that lacks basic facilities. While AENA and industry associations recently agreed to suspend these fees until the end of 2027, unions argue that this financial deal fails to address the lack of proper infrastructure at the new site.
A technical report from the Canary Institute of Occupational Safety (ICASEL) has backed the unions' concerns, confirming that the current location is unsuitable. While the unions are open to a transition period while a permanent solution is found, they are demanding immediate improvements to the current site.
Union representatives have rejected the employers' suggestion to wait until 2027 for a resolution, calling the current working environment unhealthy. CCOO Canarias emphasized that any business agreement between the airport and transport companies is invalid if it compromises the basic rights of staff. With the health of workers at stake, the unions are now turning to labor inspectors to force a change in these working conditions.
