Tenerife Showcases Gastronomy at Monaco’s Spanish Cultural Days
Tenerife showcased its culinary heritage at Monaco’s Spanish Gastronomic and Cultural Days, using high-end dining to strengthen diplomatic ties and position the island as a sophisticated destination for luxury travelers.
Tenerife’s culinary scene took center stage at the Spanish Gastronomic and Cultural Days in Monaco from June 17 to 21. Organized by the Spanish Embassy and the Principality’s Directorate of Cultural Affairs, the event celebrated 150 years of diplomatic ties between the two regions by using fine dining as a bridge for cultural exchange.
The highlight of the week was a gala dinner on June 20 at the iconic Café de Paris in Monte Carlo, attended by Prince Albert II of Monaco. Chef Alberto Margallo of the restaurant San Sebastián 57 was chosen to represent the island’s unique flavors. Moving away from traditional expectations, Margallo showcased Tenerife’s local produce—including its signature potatoes, mojos, and various fruits—paired with wines from the island’s different regions.
For the Cabildo de Tenerife, this event was a strategic move to reach high-spending travelers and position the island as a sophisticated destination. Officials believe that participating in such prestigious forums helps move Tenerife beyond typical tourist stereotypes, instead highlighting its commitment to sustainability, authenticity, and professional excellence.
For the local tourism industry, the event served as both a showcase and a way to influence key decision-makers. Tenerife Tourism officials praised Chef Margallo’s work as a masterclass in "gastronomic diplomacy," proving that the island’s traditional roots can be presented in a modern, high-end way. Reflecting on the event, Margallo noted that such gatherings are vital for showing that Spanish cuisine goes far beyond the mainland, appealing to a global audience that values unique, high-quality experiences.
