Over 2,000 seniors attended Tenerife's 'Seniors' Piñata,' organised by the Island Council, demonstrating a strong demand for social and cultural events that combat loneliness among older people.

The 'Seniors' Piñata' at the Tenerife Exhibition Centre was a huge success, drawing over 2,000 people yesterday. This large turnout, which was more than expected, shows a clear need for more social and cultural events for older people.

The event, now in its second year, was put together by the Islenior program of the Tenerife Island Council (Cabildo de Tenerife). Hundreds of seniors from various island associations gathered in the Multipurpose Hall. The day was packed with entertainment, starting with a performance by the carnival group Los Cariocas, followed by singer Natalia Cordero. The Nueva Línea orchestra then got everyone dancing with songs like 'Noche de Copas' ('Night of Drinks'). The afternoon wrapped up with a show from Pepe Benavente, but not before an awards ceremony celebrated the best headpieces made by the different groups.

Rosa Dávila, president of the Tenerife Island Council, noted the huge crowd, saying the venue "has become too small for us." Laura, affectionately known as "la Lecherita" (the Milkmaid) and a recognized "Carnival Guardian," also spoke about how important these events are. She stressed that creating places where seniors can connect helps fight loneliness.

María, who leads the 'Amigos de la Amistad de las Chumberas' (Friends of Friendship of Las Chumberas) Association with over eighty members, shared her group's enthusiasm. She highlighted how valuable these gatherings are for socialising, offering something different from their regular meetings. This year's event also saw more elaborate group costumes, a new highlight for its second edition. Such events underscore the vital role local governments play in supporting the well-being and active involvement of older people, especially as Spain's population continues to age.
