Administrative delays have pushed the construction of the new 6-million-euro Tenerife Sea Sports Center in Santa Cruz back to 2026, further extending the city's lack of dedicated nautical facilities.

Plans to revitalize nautical activity on the Valleseco coastline have been pushed back once again. According to Diario de Avisos, the Tenerife Sea Sports Center (Cdmar) project is now over a year behind schedule. While the island council originally hoped to begin construction by late 2025, administrative delays in transferring land from the Port Authority have pushed the tender process into 2026.

This delay means Santa Cruz de Tenerife will remain without dedicated nautical sports facilities, a gap that has existed since the old Cidemat center closed in March 2020 due to structural decay. Replacing the old building with the new Cdmar—a project requiring the demolition of the existing site—will cost over 6 million euros. Yolanda Moliné, the Minister of Sports, stated that the current priority is finalizing the land transfer, which is essential to moving the project forward.

The proposed design, unveiled by island vice president Lope Afonso, features a two-story building intended to blend seamlessly into the urban landscape. The plan aims to better connect the city to the coast, linking the Los Charcos area with the Carboneras warehouses through new pedestrian paths. Key features include a dry marina, boat launch ramps, dining areas, green spaces, and dedicated training facilities.

Technically, the design includes a watchtower that honors the original Cidemat lighthouse, updated with a shading mesh and floating platforms to make the area more comfortable. Once the contract is awarded, construction is expected to take 21 months. While the project aims to restore the capital’s historical connection to the sea, residents must continue to wait for the necessary bureaucratic hurdles to be cleared before work can begin.
