Tenerife has launched a new educational program in local schools to teach students the historical and artisanal significance of traditional Canary Island clothing, aiming to preserve the region's cultural heritage.

Efforts to preserve cultural identity in the Canary Islands have moved into the classroom. The Tenerife Island Council and the Santa Cruz City Council have launched a new training program in eleven local schools, aiming to teach students that traditional historical clothing is more than just a festive costume.

This initiative addresses concerns that heritage is being trivialized during pilgrimages and public celebrations. Efraín Medina, the Minister of Employment and Education, emphasized the need to provide younger generations with a rigorous understanding of these garments. He noted that respecting tradition requires knowing the history and artisanal craftsmanship behind the clothing. Beyond its visual appeal, the project is designed to strengthen social cohesion and protect the island's collective memory.

The program goes beyond theory, offering hands-on activities that teach traditional manufacturing techniques. By introducing these skills in schools, authorities hope to ensure that the next generation can act as guardians of a legacy that defines the archipelago’s unique culture. This initiative is part of a broader effort to safeguard intangible heritage, based on the belief that properly teaching these customs is the best way to preserve the identity of Tenerife’s traditional dress.
