Tenerife’s ‘ZERO Energy Poverty’ Campaign Supports Nearly 100 Vulnerable Households
The "ZERO Energy Poverty" campaign in Tenerife has successfully supported 97 vulnerable households through energy efficiency improvements, technical assistance, and the training of local energy agents.
The "ZERO Energy Poverty" campaign has reached a successful conclusion in the Canary Islands, providing a vital support network for nearly 100 vulnerable households. Led by the Moeve Foundation and the Tenerife Island Council, and carried out by the organizations Asmaer and Provivienda, the project highlights how energy efficiency is a key tool for social justice in an era where high utility costs often lead to social exclusion.
The results, shared at the Island Center for Volunteer Organizations, show the project’s significant impact. Through a collaborative effort, 97 families across the island received support. The program operated on two levels: raising awareness through 39 information sessions and providing direct, technical help to 23 homes across 11 municipalities. This included optimizing electricity contracts, distributing efficiency kits, and providing 30 energy-efficient appliances to help lower bills and improve living standards.
The program also focused on long-term sustainability by training 16 professionals and volunteers as "energy agents." These agents are now equipped to identify households in need and provide ongoing technical advice. This network was made possible by the active participation of 13 organizations, including Cáritas Diocesana de Tenerife, the José Luis Montesinos Canary Foundation, Sonrisas Canarias, and the Canary Intercultural Institute.
Águeda Fumero, the Councilor for Social Action, emphasized that this coordination between the public sector and social organizations is essential for identifying needs that might otherwise go unnoticed. The Moeve Foundation added that the transition to cleaner energy must go hand-in-hand with improving the quality of life for the most vulnerable. Given the success of this initiative, the organizers plan to continue the program, aiming to build a lasting support structure that balances environmental sustainability with social protection for families in Tenerife.
