Tenerife’s Zálatta Espacio Escénico Launches New Season of Intimate Theater
Tenerife’s Zálatta Espacio Escénico kicks off its new season on September 18 with a diverse lineup of intimate, community-focused productions ranging from reflective drama to situational comedy.
Tenerife’s independent theater scene is kicking off the new season with a focus on diverse genres and intimate, community-centered performances. Zálatta Espacio Escénico, located at 119 Carretera Monte de las Mercedes in La Laguna, is leading this effort, positioning itself as a creative alternative to mainstream entertainment.
The season begins on September 18 at 8:30 p.m. with Encrucijadas. Un espejo lejano (Crossroads. A Distant Mirror). Directed by Telesforo Rodríguez with dramaturgy by Cirilo Leal, the play examines the role of theater itself. Featuring actors Héctor Armas, Inés Rodríguez, Wame Gutiérrez, Eva González, and Leticia Torres, the story explores the tension between preserving cultural heritage and the real estate development that threatens our collective memory. This production is a collaboration between Teatro Leal and Zálatta Teatro.
On September 26 at 8:30 p.m., the tone shifts to comedy with Se vende… o se intenta (For Sale... or Trying to Be) by Benayga Taller de Teatro. This farce uses relatable characters and situational humor to tell the story of a real estate agency.
Despite its small size—holding just over 30 people—Zálatta Espacio Escénico remains a vital part of the island's cultural landscape. By prioritizing a close connection between performers and the audience, the venue offers a unique experience. Through a mix of local and Ibero-American productions, Zálatta continues to prove that intimate, diverse theater is a powerful way to engage a wide range of viewers.
