Tenerife’s Titsa Announces Record €19.6 Million Investment in High-Capacity Bus Fleet
Tenerife’s transport operator Titsa is investing 19.6 million euros to acquire 37 high-capacity, advanced buses as part of a broader strategy to modernize its fleet and alleviate congestion.
Titsa is significantly upgrading its fleet with a record-breaking investment. According to the Tenerife Island Council, the company is set to acquire 37 new buses at an average cost of 531,242 euros each—the highest price per unit in the island’s history. This latest move brings the total investment since 2023 to 151 million euros, covering the addition of 388 new buses.
The 19.6 million euro budget increase isn't just due to rising costs; it reflects a strategic shift toward larger, more advanced vehicles. With passenger numbers exceeding 87 million last year, the council is prioritizing high-capacity buses to ease congestion on busy routes in the north and metropolitan areas.
The new order focuses on size and technology: 84% of the buses will be over 15 meters long. This includes 23 hybrid articulated buses—costing 576,000 euros each—designed to increase capacity between Santa Cruz and La Laguna. Additionally, the order includes three electric buses at 660,000 euros each, highlighting the higher cost of transitioning to zero-emission vehicles.
This investment builds on previous contracts, including a large order of 247 units restructured by the current government. These efforts have already lowered the average age of the fleet to about three and a half years.
While the 19.6 million euro figure serves as a spending ceiling, the final cost may decrease depending on the bids submitted by manufacturers. The new buses are expected to arrive within a year and enter service by the end of 2027. At that point, the company will need to determine the additional staffing required to manage the increased capacity. Ultimately, this plan shows the Island Council’s commitment to modernizing public transport through larger, more specialized vehicles rather than simply replacing older ones.
