Tenerife’s Teide National Park Named Prime Spot for 2026 Solar Eclipse Viewing

Astronomers say that Teide National Park in Tenerife will be a prime spot to view the solar eclipse on August 12, 2026. While the Canary Islands won't be in the path of totality—which will cross northern mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands—observers in Tenerife will still see a significant partial eclipse. At 7:34 p.m., the moon will cover approximately 73% of the sun.

Tenerife is an ideal location for this event. The island’s volcanic landscape, which rises over 2,000 meters, provides the clear, stable air necessary for precise astronomical observation. These same conditions have already made the Teide Observatory a world-renowned hub for space research. The eclipse will remain visible from the island until 8:23 p.m.
