Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA) is screening Erige Sehiri’s acclaimed film Under the Fig Trees this weekend, offering audiences a poignant look at human mobility and the lives of African women.

Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA) is bringing world-class cinema to the island this weekend with the screening of Under the Fig Trees. Directed by Franco-Tunisian filmmaker Erige Sehiri, the film was a major success at the Tarifa-Tangier African Film Festival.

Screenings will take place at 7:00 p.m. from this Friday through Sunday. The film is notable for blending documentary-style realism with narrative fiction—a signature approach for Sehiri, who previously explored these themes in her 2018 work, As-Sekka. Under the Fig Trees gained international recognition two years ago when it was featured in the Directors' Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival.

The story follows three women from the Ivory Coast across different generations and an unaccompanied minor. Through their experiences, the director offers an introspective look at human mobility and the lives of African women within the continent. This compelling narrative earned the film a spot in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes, cementing its status as a significant piece of contemporary auteur cinema.

The cast features Aïssa Maïga, Debora Lobe Naney, Laetitia Ky, Estelle Kenza Dogbo, Foued Zaazaa, Mohamed Grayaa, and Touré Blamassi. The film will be shown in its original Arabic and French, with Spanish subtitles. By bringing this title to Tenerife, TEA continues to highlight the growing influence of African filmmakers who use their work to document complex social realities.
