The Auditorio de Tenerife’s Symphony Hall will be renamed the María Orán Symphony Hall to honor the legacy of the late Tenerife-born soprano and her significant contributions to music and education.

The Symphony Hall at the Auditorio de Tenerife is set to be renamed the María Orán Symphony Hall. The Island Council’s Governing Council approved the change this week, honoring the Tenerife-born soprano (1943–2018) by linking her name to one of the Canary Islands' most important cultural venues.

The decision celebrates more than just a legendary performer; it recognizes a woman whose influence reached far beyond the stage. After beginning her training at the local conservatory, Orán built a successful international career, performing with some of the world’s most prestigious orchestras. She also left a lasting mark on the local arts community through her teaching at the Higher Conservatory of Music of the Canary Islands, where she helped shape the next generation of vocalists.

José Carlos Acha, the Minister of Culture, Museums, and Sports, stated that the renaming honors an artist who remained deeply committed to musical education in her home region throughout her global career. Orán had previously been recognized with the Gold Medal of the Island of Tenerife in 1994 and had a music prize named in her honor by the CajaCanarias Foundation. By renaming the hall, the Island Council is cementing her legacy as a key figure in 20th-century Spanish opera.
