Tenerife’s Pascua Florida Gains International Acclaim as Holy Week Art Showcase
Guía de Isora’s Pascua Florida has evolved into a major international artistic event, transforming the municipality into an immersive, multidisciplinary gallery that reinterprets Holy Week traditions through avant-garde installations.
The Pascua Florida in Guía de Isora has grown from a local tradition into a major national artistic event. Its rising international profile is clear, with a professional florist from the Czech Republic recently requesting to participate—a significant milestone for an event that has successfully blended religious tradition with contemporary art in less than 20 years.
Under the artistic direction of Carlos Curbelo, this year’s exhibition features 24 installations exploring the themes of the Passion, death, and resurrection. The works are notable for their multidisciplinary approach, combining organic materials like flowers and wood with textiles to create a space for reflection. The logistics are equally impressive: after months of planning, artists begin assembly on Palm Sunday and work through Maundy Thursday. This year’s lineup includes renowned figures such as Juan Chamorro, Álex Segura, Ignacio Guillén, Jordi Abelló, and Nela Ochoa, alongside Curbelo, who created eleven of the pieces.
The event has revitalized public spaces in the Tenerife municipality, particularly the Plaza de Nuestra Señora de La Luz, which sees a constant stream of visitors throughout the week. The audience is diverse, drawing both local residents and tourists from across the island who are eager to experience this unique addition to the Holy Week calendar.
Sociologically, the success of Pascua Florida lies in its ability to transform urban streets into a temporary museum where avant-garde art meets traditional religious themes. By incorporating theater, music, and dance alongside visual art, the event does more than just preserve religious history; it reinterprets it. The result is an immersive experience that resonates emotionally with visitors, offering a distinct and meaningful cultural alternative during the holiday season.
