Tenerife's Oldest Restaurant Marks 126 Years, Never Closed
Bar Chucho-Casa Emiliano in Tenerife, the island's oldest restaurant, has remarkably remained open for 126 years since 1899, run by four generations of the same family and never closing its doors despite historical events.
While many bars in Tenerife have closed their doors over the years, one restaurant has defied the odds, remaining open for an incredible 126 years.
Bar Chucho-Casa Emiliano, founded in 1899, proudly holds the title of the island's oldest restaurant. Remarkably, it has never shut its doors due to outside events.
This eatery's story began in the late 19th century when Domingo González González opened a small wine cellar and lupini bean shop in La Orotava, popular with locals. Since then, the business has been run by four generations of the same family and continues to be a beloved gathering spot for residents.
In 1977, Jesús González Domínguez, known as Chucho, took over, and he still runs it today, keeping its unique character and personal feel alive.
In 2019, Bar Chucho-Casa Emiliano received the Gold Medal of Tenerife, an award honouring its many years of continuous operation.
Not even major historical events in Spain have managed to close its doors; in fact, the establishment even managed to add its first-ever outdoor terrace, which is still a popular feature today.
One of its unique aspects is its opening hours: it's only open from 11:30 AM to 4:30 PM. This is just enough time to serve lunch and wines to the loyal customers who fill the place every day.
Bar Chucho-Casa Emiliano is known for its traditional Canarian cuisine, offering generous portions at affordable prices. Must-try dishes include its homemade tortilla, classic sandwiches, simple but special burgers, and its local wines and produce.
Its philosophy is simple: homemade food with fresh ingredients and friendly, welcoming service, which has won the hearts of all who visit.
Every corner retains the feel of an old wine cellar, and the dishes keep the authentic flavours passed down through generations. This unique establishment continues to write its story, 126 years on.
