Tenerife's oldest restaurant, Bar Chucho-Casa Emiliano, has operated continuously for 126 years in La Orotava, offering traditional Canarian food and a glimpse into the island's history.

While many historic bars and restaurants in Tenerife have closed over the years due to changing times, one establishment in the far north of the island has stood strong since the late 1800s. Bar Chucho-Casa Emiliano, considered Tenerife's oldest restaurant, has been open for 126 years without ever closing a single day due to outside reasons.

Located in La Orotava, this historic spot has kept its original charm through generations. It's a popular meeting place for both locals and visitors who want to experience traditional Canarian food and a piece of the island's living history.

The bar's story began in the late 19th century when Domingo González González opened a small wine cellar and lupini bean shop, which quickly became a local favorite. The business has since been passed down through four generations, always remaining a community hub.

In 1977, Jesús González Domínguez, known as Chucho, took over. He still runs the bar today, ensuring it keeps its authentic feel and unique character.

Bar Chucho-Casa Emiliano received the Gold Medal of Tenerife in 2019, an award that recognized its many years of continuous operation.

Remarkably, no event in Spanish history has ever forced its closure. In fact, the bar was even able to add an outdoor terrace for the first time, which remains one of its popular features today.

One striking aspect of the bar is its short opening hours. Bar Chucho-Casa Emiliano is open only from 11:30 AM to 4:30 PM daily – just five hours. This is enough time to serve its loyal customers, who fill the place almost every day for lunch and wine.

The menu features traditional Canarian cuisine, known for its generous portions and affordable prices. Must-try items include its homemade tortilla, classic sandwiches, simple yet distinctive hamburgers, and a selection of local wines and products.

The bar's philosophy is clear: homemade food made with fresh ingredients, served with a warm and friendly approach. This dedication has earned it the affection of everyone who visits.

Every corner of Bar Chucho-Casa Emiliano still feels like an old winery, and its dishes carry the same traditional essence passed down through generations. It remains a truly unique place, continuing to write its history 126 years later.
