Tenerife’s MUNA Museum to Host 13th Annual MUSA Festival Celebrating Mexican Culture

The Museum of Nature and Archaeology (MUNA) in Tenerife is set to host the 13th annual MUSA Festival this September, with this year’s program celebrating the culture of Mexico. Organized by the Tenerife Island Council’s Autonomous Agency of Museums and Centers (OAMC), the event aims to strengthen the museum’s role as a center for cultural exchange in the Canary Islands.
This festival is more than just entertainment; it reflects the significant demographic shifts in the Canary Islands, which have evolved from a region of emigration to a destination for people from around the world. Since 2014, MUNA has updated its strategy to ensure its galleries serve as welcoming spaces that encourage reflection on diversity. This approach has been well-received, with last year’s festival—dedicated to Brazil—attracting a record-breaking 5,000 visitors.
José Carlos Acha, the Island Councilor for Culture, Museums, and Sports, noted that the choice of Mexico is part of a broader cultural diplomacy effort. The festival will serve as a lead-up to the 8th Tricontinental Craft Fair, held in Santa Cruz de Tenerife from late October to early November, where Mexico will also be the guest of honor. By aligning these events, the island hopes to maximize the impact of Mexican art and heritage.
Since it began, the MUSA Festival has highlighted a diverse range of nations, including Morocco, Japan, India, Senegal, Germany, and China. The full schedule of events—featuring film, performing arts, and discussions—will be released by the organizers in the coming days. Through this initiative, MUNA continues its commitment to bridging the gap between local life and the international community, using education to foster intercultural dialogue.
